Hotspot Shield®, one of the world’s most downloaded VPN apps with 650M+ installs, integrated the Octopus Community SDK and saw up to +90% retention uplift among community users — while navigating the unique moderation challenges of a global, privacy-focused audience.

Why Hotspot Shield® chose in-app community to boost engagement and retention
About Hotspot Shield®
Hotspot Shield® is one of the world’s leading VPN applications, trusted by hundreds of millions of users across 125+ countries. Part of Point Wild, a global leader in cybersecurity, protecting individuals and businesses from the ever-evolving threats of the digital world, Hotspot Shield® operates on a freemium model combining ad-supported free access with premium subscriptions.
Their business challenge
Hotspot Shield® faced a classic utility app challenge: users activate their VPN, browse, and leave — often without even opening the app interface. Sessions are short, and there’s little reason to come back beyond the functional need.
The product team saw an opportunity: creating a social layer that would give users a reason to engage with the Hotspot Shield® Community. The social layer provided a forum for users to interact, discuss their VPN usage, and for Hotspot Shield to gather direct user insights on how to improve the customer experience
But for a VPN app, community comes with unique challenges. Users care deeply about privacy. The audience is global and multilingual. And a significant portion are younger demographics, creating specific moderation requirements.
How Hotspot Shield® integrated Octopus Community
Hotspot Shield® integrated the Octopus Community native SDK, embedding the community feed as a dedicated tab in the main navigation — complete with a notification badge to drive discovery.
Phase 1 — iOS (October 2025): community deployed with a 50/50 A/B test tracking retention, sessions, and in-app time.
Phase 2 — Android (January 2026): after three months of proven iOS results, community extended to Android with the same methodology, confirming the retention impact.
Integrated features: push notifications, notification badge, custom A/B test event tracking.
What the community made possible
Notification badge: a simple feature with massive impact

When Octopus sent a community notification highlighting a product poll, daily active community users jumped from 800 to 8,000 overnight — a 10× increase. The badge on the community tab icon created a discovery loop, drawing in users who had never explored the community before.
Content creation support for a strong launch
Octopus provided hands-on content creation during the first months — crafting brand posts, testing editorial angles, and sharing learnings. This premium onboarding service let Hotspot Shield® launch a vibrant community without diverting internal resources.
Tailored moderation for a privacy-focused, multilingual audience
Moderating a VPN community is uniquely challenging: users discuss across multiple languages, with a significant proportion of American students bringing fast-evolving social trends into the feed. Octopus configured custom moderation including automatic shadowbanning of frustrated messages (giving support time to respond before posts go public), multilingual content filtering, and privacy-appropriate rules.
In-app cross-sell through promotional posts
Hotspot Shield® used the community to promote their ad-blocking product through a pinned post — testing the community as a direct cross-sell channel. With CTA-enabled posts now available in the SDK, this opens a scalable path for in-app product promotion.
Community-powered product feedback at scale
Product polls within the community gathered massive engagement on questions about new UI and usage patterns — the largest poll reached almost 10,000 responses. This gave the product team direct user insights that would have otherwise required costly market research.
Community results
- Nearly 1M users visited the community
- Community users open the app 4.6× more often than others
- Up to +90% retention uplift for community users on iOS at W12
- +8.4% overall cohort retention uplift on iOS at W12
Positive signal on app store rankings
Following the community launches, Hotspot Shield® observed improved app store rankings in its main countries on both the App Store and Google Play. While many factors influence store rankings, the correlation between increased engagement metrics and improved visibility is a positive signal.

Community as a strategic engagement layer for utility apps
For Hotspot Shield®, the in-app community solved the fundamental challenge of utility apps: giving users a reason to come back. By turning a single-purpose VPN tool into a social experience, Octopus Community helped transform passive users into active, engaged members — with nearly 1 million community visitors and retention uplift growing week over week. And with the community still in its testing phase, these numbers are a floor, not a ceiling.
