Retention & revenue

Give users a reason to open your app and come back for more.

Every reply, reaction and notification a member gets is a reason to open the app again tomorrow. Octopus clients test this with real A/B tests, community versus no community, same app, same users, split into control and test groups. The result holds across industries: +20% retention uplift for the whole app, +40% on average for community users specifically, and 2 to 5x more app sessions among community members.

Retention & revenue

Increased time in app translates into increased revenue.

Retention and revenue are not separate benefits. A/B tests in client apps prove a +12% average increase in revenue across industries, from ad-supported media apps to subscription and e-commerce models. The more time members spend engaging with each other, the more opportunities you have to convert, upsell or monetize through ads. Premium groups, in-community promotions and sponsored posts add revenue on top.

Support, moderation & communication

Get a direct communication channel to your users, right inside your app.

Email open rates keep falling, and push notifications get ignored or disabled entirely. A message posted in your own community, to an audience that already chose to be there, is more likely to be seen. It is a channel you fully own: add pictures, videos or polls, pin a post at the top of the feed whenever you want, and reach the exact group of users you are targeting.

Support, moderation & communication

Customer support, moderation, communication: fully handled by Octopus AI.

Every post is scored by AI the instant it is published, obvious violations are removed automatically and edge cases go to Octopus’s own human moderation team. Support questions are detected, routed to your existing helpdesk or answered from your FAQ. Your team gets an alert only when something actually needs its attention.

Data, CRM & product

Own your data, instead of borrowing it from another platform.

Understand your users without relying on Facebook, Reddit, X or Discord. As third-party cookies disappear and ad-tracking IDs face growing restrictions, every profile field, message, poll answer and preference your members share becomes first-party data, volunteered with full consent. It is a real-time, continuous read on user sentiment that replaces the cost and delay of traditional research, and that you can use to optimize your product and CRM.

Data, CRM & product

Give anonymous users a reason to connect and register in your app.

Decide whether people can browse your community for free, and whether posting, reacting or messaging is open to everyone or only to registered users. You control who can participate, and under what conditions. Once real conversation is already happening, a community becomes a reason for anonymous users to actually create an account, directly improving your registration and login numbers.

To DIY, or to Octopus?

A safe, moderated, scalable in-app community is a real engineering commitment. Here is what changes when you buy it instead of building it.

If you build it yourself

  • Months of development at high cost, requiring a dedicated cross-functional team (frontend, backend, product, design), with no guarantee of scale, UX quality or compliance.
  • Moderation, safety, abuse tooling and support workflows to build and maintain indefinitely.
  • No track record or published results: frontend, backend, back office, push notifications and content management all built from scratch.
  • Ongoing engineering investment to optimize the community, ship new features and stay legally compliant.

If you get Octopus

  • 1 to 3 days of integration for a fully optimized, scalable social experience, battle-tested at every level, covering UI, push notifications, moderation, support, back office and analytics.
  • AI moderation and support tooling included and maintained for you, backed by our team of experts and legal expertise.
  • Proven across a broad range of industries, in apps with 10M+ monthly active users, with published, approved results.
  • Monthly feature updates to better engage, monetize, understand and manage your audience, on iOS, Android, Flutter, React Native, Unity and Web.

“Our secret hope was that the community would eventually run on its own, powered by its members. A few months in, that hope has more than come true. The community has become part of our core value proposition, and the retention impact proves it.”

Every feature meets startup to enterprise compliance

Octopus acts as a data processor under GDPR. A Data Processing Agreement is available on request.

You own the data

Everything created inside the community legally belongs to you and can be exported at any time.

Human review for edge cases

Octopus’s own moderation team handles manual review, rule calibration and escalations in the background.

Custom rules

Minimum age policy

A minimum age of 16 applies to all community accounts by default, with configurable age-gating available.

Frequently asked questions

What is the pricing, and what is included?

Pricing is based on your app’s monthly active users. That single price covers everything: the UI, backend infrastructure, AI-powered moderation and customer support, push notifications, the feed algorithm, video support and more. One predictable number to budget per year, with no line-item surprises.

What size audience do we need for a community to work?

We recommend at least 1,000 daily active users, or 20,000 to 50,000 monthly active users, to ensure enough people join and interact. Some apps see strong results with smaller audiences, as few as 5,000 to 10,000 MAU, when the community’s shared interest is strong enough to drive engagement.

We already run communities on Facebook, Reddit or Discord. Why add an in-app one?

The two work well side by side, reaching different segments of your audience the same way separate social accounts do. An in-app community adds three things a generalist platform cannot: frictionless access for 100% of your user base in a single click, real-time first-party data instead of borrowed platform data, and social features woven directly into your existing user journey.

Can we migrate our existing community data into Octopus?

Yes, there is no limit on the volume of data we can import. We review how your current community is structured (profiles, posts, comments, reactions) to confirm the mapping, and in most cases the migration is straightforward.

Do users need to create a separate profile to join?

No. Single sign-on automatically authenticates users the moment they enter the community, so they get a profile without lifting a finger. You can also carry over existing profile data from your app (username, photo, bio) or let users manage their own community profile.

Is this an SDK or a webview?

It is a native SDK, not a webview. Native screens are the only way to deliver a high-quality social experience: your users get the same seamless feel as the rest of your app, with no jarring transition into a browser-based screen.

Where is our data hosted, and are you GDPR and DSA compliant?

Community content and moderation data are hosted in the EU. Octopus is GDPR and DSA compliant, and a Data Processing Agreement is available on request.

Who owns the data, and can we export it?

You do, entirely. We don't claim any legal ownership over your community's data, and we don't use it for our own purposes; Octopus is a white-label solution built to work the way you need it to. You can access and export all of it at any time through our API.
